What is the Circadian Rhythm?

The circadian rhythm is the body's internal timing system for organizing functions that repeat on an approximately twenty-four-hour schedule. Sleep and wakefulness are the most familiar examples, but circadian timing also influences body temperature, hormone release, digestion, alertness, and physical performance.
