What is Deep Sleep?
Deep sleep is the deepest stage of non-REM sleep and is also called N3 or slow-wave sleep. During this stage, large slow brain waves become prominent, heart rate and breathing are generally steady, muscles are relaxed, and waking someone can be difficult.
What Changes During Deep Sleep
- Brain waves
- High-amplitude, low-frequency delta activity becomes dominant.
- Awareness
- Responsiveness to ordinary sounds and touch is greatly reduced.
- Muscle activity
- Muscles remain relaxed but are not paralyzed as they are during REM.
- Timing
- Deep sleep is concentrated mainly in the first third of the night.
- Awakening
- Sudden waking may produce confusion and heavy grogginess called sleep inertia.
Physical Restoration
Deep sleep is associated with tissue maintenance, immune function, energy regulation, and the release of growth hormone. These processes are important across the lifespan, not only during childhood.
Memory and Learning
Slow-wave activity is involved in strengthening certain memories and coordinating communication between brain regions involved in learning.
Why More Is Not Always Better
Deep sleep naturally varies with age, recent sleep loss, illness, exercise, and individual biology. The goal is not to maximize one stage at the expense of the rest of the night. Healthy sleep requires a normal progression through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM.
